LiPo Batteries
With the recent success of our latest Electric Fly-In,
I just wanted to bring a little info to your attention.
Our AMA magazine, Model Aviation, has had
a great series of articles on batteries.
Starting in July (page
29), this article describes the basics
of Lipo's, choosing them, and how to use them safely. It is followed by the
August (page 47) article, on how to best transport batteries. And lastly part
three in Septembers issue, (page 45), the best way to charge them.
I really hope all of you will go back and
read these articles. We all can learn a few things from these articles, I know
I did.
Here are a few highlights, and tips that I
felt were really good.
• Never charge batteries unattended
• Charge batteries in an isolated area away from
flammable materials.
• Never charge batteries inside a hot vehicle
• Using your cars battery is not advisable (Cars have burned
in the past)
• Triple check charge settings before starting the
charge cycle
• Charge batteries at 1C to improve battery life
• Do not attempt to charge any pack if the unloaded
individual cell voltages are less than 3.0 volts
• Allow batteries to cool between charges
• Don't overcharge (4.1 volts per cell, is optimal for
battery life)
• Balance charge whenever possible
• Charge at 1C---A puffed/swollen battery should not be
used.
• If motor, ESC, or battery is extremely hot after use,
this is a sign that your setup is incorrect. Ask for help if you are not sure.
There is a wealth of knowledge at HCRCC.
Finally I hope that all of you will read
these articles, and continue to learn all about the wonderful things our hobby
has to offer. Stay safe.
