Safety Letter
May/June 2015
Rain, Rain, Go Away........
This has been one wet Spring. As I write
this letter (4-17-15), we have had a very rainy three week period, that hasn't
allowed for much flying. From a safety point of view, that means no one is
getting hurt. But it also means that no one is having any fun either. Let's all
hope that this situation changes soon.
Since our field is so wet, let me warn you
of a few items that I think you should be aware of.
The most obvious is your footing. There
will be some very soft and slippery areas, especially near the pilots stations,
and as you get closer to the runway. This is where all the water naturally
drains to. Take care, and don't rush.
Your airplane may not like these soft conditions either. If you land an
airplane too fast, and hit the “mud”, and it could tear off your landing gear.
We all know that “Props and Fingers” don't
mix. And also that water and electricity don't mix. Avoid standing in puddles
when you plug in chargers, power supplies, and batteries. Getting a “shock” is
no laughing matter. It could even be fatal.
When the weather improves, and things
finally warm up, this will also let our bug population increase. Gnats and
mosquitoes might become a big problem, just be aware. I have noticed that
spiders of all kinds like to hide in and under our trash cans, and tables. They
are trying to get out of the rain too. We will monitor the situation and deal
with them if they become serious. Wasps, bees, and hornets, will do their thing
too. Again just be aware.
Another Spring /Summer reminder is that of
sunburn. Wearing large brim hats, and using an SPF 30 sunscreen, will really
help you avoid long term damage.
Volunteers will be needed to help “Man the
Gate”. During weekends and events, please help “Police” the southern “No Fly
Zone”. We will ask for volunteers as things progress.
Lastly, I'd like to remind everyone that
during our scheduled events, (Warbirds, Fun-flies, etc.) we really need every
ones help, to act as safety officers.
Please keep an extra eye out for our visitors. Gently let them know
where they can, and cannot go. If they are visiting pilots, lend a hand and
explain how things are done at HCRCC. We have a great facility here in Henry
County. Let us all try a little harder
to keep it great.
Wishing you all a fun and safe flying
season. L.A.P.
