Safety Letter September 2013

September, Labor Day weekend, the races at  AMS, barbeques, and hopefully great weather coming for flying at Red Hawk field in Henry County.

As many of you are aware, there has been major changes these last few weeks at our flying field. As with everything in life most changes are good, some not so good.  But given time all things equal out.

The biggest and most important change you will notice if you haven't been to the field lately is that our runway is in the process of being repaired. The ski jump, hump/dip, is being leveled out. Soon that will be followed with a new coat of sealer, and finally new paint for the whole runway. It should be something we will all be proud of. The officers have worked hard with the county officials, and we all should offer our thanks to them.

Another big change will be the addition of two more pilots stations to the north end of the field. This is so that on baseball game days we can all shift our flight pattern more to north end of the field. As stated earlier, the entrance gate will be southern border on game days. We will all have to adjust our flying pattern to make this work. But with a little practice it should be no problem at all.

For some of you who are new to the club, you might ask, "What exactly is the pattern"?  Let me explain.

Think of the pattern as a large rectangle.  The runway is the long leg of the rectangle closest to you.

               -------------------------------------------------------------      g
               I                                                                            I     a
               I                                                                            I     t
               I----------------           Runway     ---------------------I     e

This is a standard takeoff and landing pattern used by RC pilots and full scale pilots too.  The distances of the legs are not that critial for RC planes and will change depending on the size and speed of the model. Our biggest concern is that everyone uses the entrance gate as the southern most point of our pattern.
if you have any questions about this please feel free to ask any of the senior members  of the club.

Lets hope that September turn out to be a great one.  Happy flying.
