September 28, 2013 - Sunrise came early on this beautiful September Saturday morning with eight large bermuda grass pallets adorning the freshly top-coated paved runway north over-run and ready to be placed on the well prepared surface. The following members were on hand to lay out the grass: Acting Vice-President ~ Ron Hargrove, Sec. ~ J.R. Murphy, Safety Officer Larry Pryzborowski, Events Host ~ Julian Pugh, Richard Rousseau, David Mitchell, Curtis Miller, Frank Mondary, Jonah Hargrove and Davy Holcomb. (We have watch Jonah grow up at the flying field and today, as he did more than his share of the sod work, we were very pleasant reminded that he has quietly turned into a quality strong young man.)
The sod work went well and we finished up at 10:15 and started the watering-in process. We will keep the water flowing until we feel we have the sod wet-down and ready to get into the rooting process.
There was a pretty stiff east wind (15-25 mph) today and most of the attendees were happy to sit down and relax during the business meeting prior to doing a little flying. Ron Hargrove chaired the meeting with the following item presented:
1) The grass sod expense will be around $800.00 counting the fertilizer and some associated smaller items. A final figure will be provided upon receipt of our invoice from the grass supplier.
2) It was pointed out that we need to replace the wind sock as the present one has some large tears that negate the ability to determine the wind velocity via the sock’s posture.
3) We will schedule a Fun Fly for Saturday, October 12 to celebrate the condition of the paved runway and the flying field in general. Plan to be a part of this flying day and watch for additional information on this celebration.
4) It was pointed out that the landscaping service that has treated the grass runway has had a very desirable effect on this grass area and now that we have expanded the runway and the over-runs we would like to include these areas in next year’s budget. We will get an estimate from our present lawn care provider.
5) We are also considering the purchase of a second large mower with the idea in mind to keep all of our flying field grass areas mowed ourselves rather than depend on the County for this service. Needless to say, with all the other areas the County is responsible to mow, they cannot always get to the flying field on their every other week schedule thereby rendering some areas as unserviceable for the HCRCC flying activities.
6) We will be contacting the County Monday to see if they still intend to re-stripe the runway and if so, when can they do it.
7) It was mentioned that the club needs to determine how to convey our appreciation to the Henry County Parks and Recreation leadership for taking care of the paved runway.
8) The club officers need to determine which of the present officers will be willing to serve another year but still offer the membership the opportunity to offer their services for any/all of the leadership positions. Nominations will be accepted in October.
See you at the ever improving HCRCC flying field, JRM
Awesome news guys...... I will come to the fly-in if I can!
ReplyDeleteI was at the field last Sunday and I was pleasantly surprised at the condition. I am only sorry that I was not able to help with the sodding, as my luck would have it I had to work this past weekend.
ReplyDeleteI small observation, there are some rebar with (mushrooms on top) used to hold some plastic pipe in place, on the north side of the runway. These are protruding about 30” or more above the ground. Is it possible to replace these bars with a “U” shape bar (like a staple) in lieu of the single bars? The “U” shape will maintain the pipe in its location, without the protrusions above the ground. It would make the approach from the north a bit safer.
Also, the proposed date for the fun fly, will this date conflict with our neighbors (any games scheduled for that day).
Great work!
