July in Georgia........Can you say
"Humidity". I know I can. I'm sure you can too.
For your health safety please keep yourself
hydrated and make sure you take frequent sun breaks. It's also a good idea to
wear sunscreen. An SPF of 50 or greater is now recommended. Also a wide brimmed
hat really helps protect you from sunburns on your face. They can also be a
great help while flying, especially during morning sun angles.
There is a great article in this months AMA
magazine about the danger of props. July issue, page 83. Good info and warnings
about all props and the damage they can do.
I know of a few members who can attest
to that. One recent incedent resulted while an engine adjustment was being made
with the engine running. An accidentally
dropped screw driver resulted in a damaged prop, and the screw driver being
launched about 45 feet. Landing within 2 feet of a visitor. Thankfully no one
was hurt. Great lesson learned. It's best to adjust engines while they are
stopped. I know it's pain to stop and start those larger engines, but even the
manuals call out that engines be stopped for adjusting.
For the most part, we are all adults, and
I can't stop you from doing things your way, just realize the risks you
take. My job is not to police any member
or group of members, it is mearly to inform you, and to try to make us all more
safety aware. For our own safety, and more importantly for the safety of
others, especially that of visitors. Be
aware of your surroundings. I hope you have a Happy and safe July.
Blue skies and Happy
landings. Larry Przyborowski
